One of the most significant benefits of the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) procedure is that it makes it possible to have several surgeries from the same donor location. Unlike the FUE technique, in which the separate grafts are harvested from different sections of the scalp, FUT harvests a narrow strip of skin while leaving the donor region largely intact. This allows FUT to be done more than once, typically a maximum of three times, without compromising the donor zone much. The right timing between sessions and careful surgical planning by Dr. Sunnet Soni has made the all three sessions possible for him.
FUT is known for providing a higher number of grafts in a single session as compared to FUE. In some cases, like the one we highlighted, 9,000 grafts were successfully extracted across three FUT procedures. This is beneficial for those who have extensive baldness, where higher graft numbers are necessary to achieve natural hair density. The FUT has the advantage of the permanent donor zone at the rear of the scalp, which produces strong, healthy grafts. The FUT + FUE + Beard combine technique was used to extract 11,600 grafts.
Dr. Sunnet Soni utilizes FUE very sparingly to prevent additional scarring. FUE is a wonderful method, but removing too many grafts from the donor zone may cause noticeable thinning if done repeatedly. By depending on FUT and keeping FUE to a minimum, we maintained the donor zone’s density. This way, the posterior scalp will appear natural even after the three surgeries. It is a clever and long-term plan to achieve optimal cosmetic outcomes while preserving the health of the scalp.
