Techniques of Breast Reconstruction Procedure

There are mainly two techniques are scientifically proven for the breast reconstruction are as follows:

  1. Breast Implants: This is the conventional technique used by the cosmetic surgeons worldwide. With the procedure of breast implants, the surgeon inserts a tissue expander (a temporary Silastic implant), beneath a pocket under the pectoralis major muscle of the chest wall. The surgeon uses the Silicone or saline inserts for the breast implant procedure.
  2. Tissue Flap Procedures/Flap Reconstruction: The tissue flap procedures or flap reconstruction procedure uses the patient’s own body tissues apart from the breast tissues to reconstruct the breast. The body part of where the tissues are taken mostly to reconstruct the breast includes, the back, buttocks, thigh or abdomen. This procedure may be performed by leaving the donor site connected to the original sites to retain the blood supply or it may cut off and new blood supply may be connected.

Sometimes a combination of breast implants and tissue flap procedures are performed collectively to get the best aesthetic outcomes of the breast reconstruction surgery.

Moreover, the nipple and areola reconstruction procedure are also performed along with the breast reconstruction to get the best natural results of the breast reconstruction surgery.

Recovery Time

Usually, the breast reconstruction surgery takes 2-6 hours to get completed, followed by the local anaesthesia. Afterwards, a patient feels groggy, tired, and nauseous.
